How to get to San Jose super quick!- Harris Ranch

Just came back from San Jose from Los Angeles.  This time it took about 5 hours to travel to and from the two cities.  I started the drive up at 4:30 AM last Friday, no traffic, no sunlight, lots of early morning commutters, and a tank full of gas.

The Interstate 5 was an intersting drive, with only one pitstop at Harris Ranch at about 8 AM. The cattle must have been a couple of miles away as you can smell the heavy stank of the air. I drove past the small air field and the resort. They were just starting smoking prime ribs outside. I walked along the halls read the reviews and wandered into the gift shop.  Too bad i was not hungry or else i would have gone for a steak or something.

Do you drive a hybrid?

800 Mile drive: LA to San Jose on the new Honda Civic Hybrid! 40 MPG!

After buying my honda civic hybrid in Dec 2008 i have commuting to work and adding about 350 miles a week to my new civic.  My average miles per gallon for the first 1000 miles was 37 MPG. After 1000 miles, the miles per gallon has increased to 43 MPG. Now with about 4000 miles, I am averaging a commute of 46 MPG per tank of gas.

I decided to travel up north and not hold back on my travels. Going up to Napa Valley and visiting my girlfriend in San Jose has 2 weeks has been very pleasurable in the small little civic. The drivers seat is very comforable and supportive on the drive up. Read More...

Winter! Commute and Holiday driving!

2 Weeks ago I drove my family up to Northern California. The drive was a test of will power and preparation as I took my parents 2007 Honda Accord up the CA Interstate 101. The entire trek was a 7 hour drive totaling 398 miles from sunny Southern California to lusious and green Northern Calfornia.

We could have saved 50 miles and about an hour of drive time by going on the Interstate 5, however we heard that the mountain pass was snowed in the night before, so we avoided the mountains.

As we drove up the hilly curvy coastal highway, we saw the snow topped mountain ranges from afar. It's great to be able to live in California. With the coastline to my left, and beautiful mountain ranges to our right, we drove through past the groves of foot tall grass and grazing cattle.

Fall is coming... preping car for Socal.

Every three months, i try to clean up my car to have it run more efficiently. From ridding the car of trash, receipts, and an ocassional french fry that escaped being eatten to 3 month maintenance on the car: oil changes, fuild checks, tire rotations, and light car detail.

I started with the fuild checks: oil, brake fuild, steering fuild, transmission, coolant, and battery water levels. From dip sticks to visually checking the levels, it was systematic and simple. Easy 10 minutes checks can tell a driver how much eth car has been used and if any other parts needs to be looked into.

Test drive! Hyundai Genesis Reviewed!

I am in the market for a 25-30 thousand dollar, fuel efficient auto mobile to commute to work with. However, after test driving various hybrid vehicles, I noticed the cost of the vehicle to the comfort level. While I want to be environmentally friendly, something in the back of my head is urging me to test something with a bit more car for the money.  A week back, I wrote the excitment i had with driving during flex time and being able to enjoy the speedy low traffic of commuting off rush hour schedules. The feeling of freedom opened my curiousity about the type of comfortable commutting vehicle i can buy for the price of a hybrid vehicle.

FLEX Time! No traffic going home, a luxury i can afford.

I am starting to wonder which is more worth while : carpooling or flex time? One saves gas and the other saves time.

Scootors and other ways of travel.

With gas at $4.60, it pays to hyper mileage, carpool, and use public transportation. As I have wrote before i carpool with 3 other coworkers and drive about once a month. The gas usage still hits my wallet at about 4 gallons a day during the week which i drive and 1 gallon for the week i just need to drive to my carpool meetup locaton.  However, i have been considering other forms of transportation Read more...

Hyper mileaging ... getting 15%+ better gas mileage

I have been trying to save gas during my commute. Efforts to do so was by implementing hyper mileaging.  We  i started off by opening the windows rather than the air conditioning. Then by coasting half the block rather than leaving my foot on the gas pedal and braking 40 feet from the intersection. And lastly, by driving at or below the speed limit. By doing so, i was able to achieve 23 MPG in the city compared to a previous 18 MPG. Thats a difference of 5 MPG. Read more...

Nissan Altima Hybrid Review... Buy it or wait...35 MPG versus 23 MPG

I have been thinking about buying a new car to replace my current 2003 Nissan Altima. Its not that the car is bad, its the fuel prices and incentives to buy a new hybrid that has got me wondering. The question is when to buy. Currently their is a $2350 tax credit for the Altima Hybrid that makes it look very attractive to narrow the price gap between a tradition internal combustion engine (ICE)... Read more...
